During College Boards digital transformation, I contributed to targeted enhancements and design support for the Student Score Report and its related features. My work focused on making college and career planning tools more accessible, modernizing key workflows, and supporting a more flexible, student-centered reporting experience.

The Landscape

The Landscape

The College Board is a $1B+ powerhouse shaping the futures of millions through standardized testing and college readiness tools.

The Student Score Report is a critical touchpoint—where high schoolers check SAT/PSAT results, explore opportunities, and make decisions that can shape their academic journey. I provided design support to a number of enhancements and variations for the Student Score Report.

This project was a unique opportunity to work on the student-facing experience, complementing my work on the educator side of the platform. It gave me a fuller perspective on how data and insights flow across both audiences—and how we could better align the experience to support student decision-making.

Career Insights

Career Insights

One of the areas I contributed to was Career Insights, a feature designed to help students connect their SAT or PSAT scores to potential career paths.

This component served as a key entry point into College Board’s BigFuture platform, which focuses on career exploration and readiness. Based on a student’s score, we recommended a few example careers along with median income data, giving students a quick snapshot of where their strengths might align.

Students could also expand each career suggestion using an accordion UI to see more detail—like job growth, total number of jobs, common education levels, and interest alignment. There was an additional CTA at the bottom of the card to explore more careers if they wanted to dig deeper.

AP Recommendations

AP Recommendations

Persona

AP Course Recommendations had big potential: helping students discover AP classes matched to their scores, interests, and school offerings. The previous experience was a dense, desktop-only table, hard to use on mobile and not surfaced well in the Score Report.

AP Recommendations (Old Version)

I led a mobile-first redesign, turning the table into clear, scannable cards/lists and prioritizing actionable, student-friendly design at every breakpoint.

Score Match

Score Match

Score Match was a focused but important project for students unable to find their SAT scores.

I simplified the recovery flow and updated the tool to use current design patterns and systems, ensuring consistency with other College Board experiences.

Post-redesign usability testing showed that the majority of students found the tool easy to use. The main feedback was a lack of guidance for finding specific info (like SAT registration numbers) required for recovery. More support or instructions on locating these details would further improve the experience.

Impact & Learnings

Impact & Learnings

To be candid, features like Career Insights and AP Recommendations didn’t gain the traction we hoped for. Through student interviews and usability research, it became clear why: most students visit the score report with one goal—see their score and leave.

There was no strong sense of “what to do next,” and the paths forward (practice more, register again, explore careers, consider AP) varied so much from student to student that no single entry point felt universally relevant. I think without this direction from our product and business stakeholders, it's tough to find the answer to that.

This experience surfaced a deeper product challenge: the lack of a clear, actionable narrative for students post-score. While we created thoughtful features, they were competing for attention in a moment where students were just looking for quick answers. It’s a gap in the overall student experience that, to this day, hasn’t fully been solved.

Reflection

Reflection

Working on both the student and educator sides of College Board’s reporting tools gave me a deeper understanding of what really matters at each step. For students, getting their score is just one moment in a much bigger, more complex journey—what happens next isn’t always clear, and it looks different for everyone. Designing for that kind of variability meant staying flexible, empathetic, and advocating for experiences that truly meet students where they are—even when the larger organizational direction was still catching up.

I’m proud to have played a part in making those next steps a little clearer and more useful. Looking back, I wish I’d been able to push even harder for a more unified, integrated strategy—something that could have turned those scores into personalized, actionable roadmaps for every student, no matter where they’re starting from.
